What Fabric Suits a Structured Dress Silhouette?

September 07, 2026 · DONGFAN Editorial Team

You designed a structured dress that holds a shape. The fabric they sent collapses.

The hidden risk

Structure is fabric plus construction — but most 'structured' fabrics from stock houses are actually balanced fabrics sold as structured. Suppliers won't tell you the difference because you didn't ask.

How to judge

Drape-test the swatch on a stand. If it folds against itself without coaxing, it's structured. If it falls against your hand, it's not.

What the supplier must provide

Be honest about which fabrics in stock are 'structured' vs 'structured-direction' — they look similar, perform very different.

How DONGFAN handles it

DONGFAN's fabric library labels structure honestly — so the structured dress gets a structured fabric, not a balanced fabric pretending to be one.

Buyer checklist

  • Drape-test swatch on stand
  • Ask if fabric is structured or balanced
  • Test garment behavior, not just hand-feel
  • Compare to a reference structured garment
  • Audit fabric labels in the library
  • Lock fabric at design freeze
